Freiburg, Germany

It was Saturday around 8:30am and I was inside of Kaufland buying some beer before I had to get on the train headed for Freiburg with the other Californians. Inside Kaufland I randomly met two German guys and they gave me a beer. It turned out that we were taking the same train so we drank together and talked with a mixture of English and German. I think these guys had been drinking all night because they were noticeably drunk. My plan wasn't to start drinking so early in the day, but oh well, when in Deutschland.

We had to get on and off around 4 trains before we made it to Freiburg, at that point my new German friends and I had parted ways at the second train stop. Once in Freiberg the two tour guides began leading the group in one direction so I started walking in the opposite direction. I saw a large church in the distance so I decided that would be a good place to start. Inside it was quite with no one in sight. I did a lap and then continued on.

For the next two hours I wandered around the city, mainly in the downtown area. There were two other churches I checked out, one of which was gigantic and it was called Munster. Outside of the Munster Church there was a large kind of farmers market and I bought a Bockwurst mit Zwiebel (sausage and grilled onions in a roll of bread). My feet began to feel sore so I decided to sit down and crack open a Ratler (half beer, half sprite, 2.5% alc). These drinks are pretty good for during the day, quite refreshing. Perhaps a good drink for going on a hike.

After a while I ran into two Californians and a French girl I know from class in Horb (Nick, Katheine, and Claire respectively). We wandered around town together. I was kind of getting bored being alone so it worked out well that they happened to find me. At one point we found a market, bought some beer, and then found a bench to sit on and relax. Within the first minute of sitting there this crazy German girl started talked to us. She had a shaved head with with a silver and black fedora hat, a black turtle neck, and these ridiculous looking silver bellbottomlike pants. Also she had a star tattooed on her face under her right eye. She was speaking in fast German about how she used to do drugs, lost her mind, then got her mind back, and now she thinks that machines are taking over the world. Her few on life reminded me of the Terminator movies. We politely left after 5 minutes.

From there we wandered around and found a coffee shop to warm up, it was raining that day. The coffee was terrible and expensive. I put some Scotch Whisky in my cup and it masked the bad taste. They do some things right out here in Germany, but coffee is not one of them.

Below are the pictures from Freiburg.

The first church I entered that day.
